Quick cooking question.....

Post by mythreesons on Tue Mar 03, 2009 11:52 am

I found a recipe that I want to try and its made in a dutch oven, which of course I don't have. I know I can probably use my crockpot or the oven to do it. How do I decide what temp to use and how long for the oven or the crockpot?I know that may seem stupid but there've been alot of recipes that I've not tried because of not knowing how what temps to use or how long to cook for...

Shannon - when something calls for a dutch oven I just use like a big pot with a lid on the stove top. Like one for spaghetti noodes or however big you need to hold the recipe you are making. HTH. Oh and I just cook on like med-hi depending...

Shannon, like Amy said, it's just a big pot. We just bought a 'dutch oven' and it's just a heavy pot with a lid.

What are the cooking instructions in the dutch oven?

In a dutch oven brown the beef in oil over medium high heat.Add onion and garlic:cook until tender.
In a small bowl, combine ketchup, Worchestershire sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, seasnings and 1 1/2 cups water.Stir into beef.Reduce heat: cover and simmer for 2-21/2 hours or until meat is tender...

I'm making hungarian goulash

Really? Just a big pot? Well geez, they could've just said that.LOL... Why buy a separate thing?

I agree with the others - use a large pot - like a pasta or soup pot.

Exactly!!! DH bought our 'big pot' aka 'dutch oven' b/c it was cast iron and he's been wanting something that isn't non-stick so he can DEGLAZE the pan, he's been watching too much food network.

Sorry I was no help on this post....but I do agree with you Shannon they could have just said a large pot instead of being all technical and saying "dutch oven"....funny how they make it seem so complicated with using such wording....on the other hand though glad it turned out well and tasted yummy..
