Rocket fuel component found in baby formula!!!

Post by rocknrollmommy616 on Fri Apr 03, 2009 11:48 pm

Researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported that 15 brands of powdered infant formula are contaminated with perchlorate, a rocket fuel component detected in drinking water in 28 states and territories.

The two most contaminated brands, made from cow’s milk, accounted for 87 percent of the U.S. powdered formula market in 2000, the scientists said.

The CDC scientists did not identify the formula brands they tested.

The little-noticed CDC findings, published in the March 2009 edition of the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology, raise new concerns about perchlorate pollution, a legacy of Cold War rocket and missile tests. Studies have established that the chemical is a potent thyroid toxin that may interfere with fetal and infant brain development (Kirk 2006).

The CDC team warned that mixing perchlorate-tainted formula powder with tap water containing “even minimal amounts” of the chemical could boost the resulting mixture’s toxin content above the level the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers safe. Many scientists contend that the EPA “safe” level is too high to protect public health.

This makes me sick! I am so pissed that they won't release the names of the companies. This is some Erin Brokovich or A Civil Action shit! They refuse to give the names b/c they feel like the companies will be taken to court and so they don't want to cause a problem. But what about our kids? If we use this water thats contaminated and this formula that's contaminated, who's to say we won't completely ruin our kids? I mean, no fucking(excuse my language, I'm very enraged...) wonder we have an obesity problem in the U.S. when this crap inevitably ends up in their systems, whether thru formula or thru the food they eat on a daily basis b/c of irrigation contamination. You'd think that the government would want to protect our children, if anything. But no, they want to protect these companies and the pentagon(and other military institutions) from having to pay for the clean up of all this junk. And of course Bush, the shithead that he was, was like, "huh? I don't care, don't make us take money out of military funding to clean up stuff. everyone will be fine. Who's up for a game of checkers?" the douche packer... I really hope this Lisa Jackson woman sticks to her promise and at LEAST enforces a lower mandatory limit of perchlorate in the drinking water. That's where it all starts. Do you see the long term effects wars have on us? The Cold War started in the 60s and ended in the 80s... it is 2009 and we are feeling the effects of this bullshit. I friggin hate politicians!

Here is the article that I read. It has a much different angle than the one Bekah posted....more of the "we really don't know much but I'm writing this article anyway". I think it depends on who the writer is as to how scared we, as the public, get. I don't think anything is ever going to be completely safe for consumption. While I'm NOT dismissing the study related to this I am cautious about what I am reading. Until the FDA issues a statement or warning I'm not going to freak out....sometimes I think reporters are just trying to scare us by reading more or less into something than there really is.

my real problem with it is that the EPA has clearly viewed it as a problem, and of course the Formula council is not going to admit it, because they would have a scare on their hands, and the public would probably go nuts. The amount of iodine is not sufficient enough to really counteract the contaminant itself especially if mixed with water that has been introduced to the perchlorate. I know there were plenty of unhealthy things that our parents and grandparents did while raising their kids, but... if it's becoming even a small issue, you're talking about little babies.... FIX IT! Sorry, with my hormones out of whack, I have very severe views on things lately... Sad

oh but it doesn't matter, Joy. They are saying this stuff is in EVERYTHING we eat, drink, and bathe with! It's IN the water, therefore it's in our food, even meat! So even if you are breastfeeding, your kid still gets traces of this stuff in his system. I know it's only traces, but somebody high up thinks it's dangerous, so maybe they should friggin do something about it. Or not let the public know about any of it (the contamination i mean) and just FIX the problem. If it's something that has to deal with water, y not just not let the people know, and fix it anyway? Especially if it's not a huge deal, which i guess some people are claiming it's not. If it's not a big deal, then why do we need to know?

True It would but at least it would only be traces and it would be filtered through us first... I just keep it all in prayer that God's protection is upon my family and children even within the aspects of what we eat and may be harmful..that it wouldn't harm us. And Thanks to God they have never gotten sick from anything... I personally think they should monitor stuff and test it BEFORE they market it to the consumer and if it does not meet certain criteria then it gets sent back to the company for them to fix it till it does..if things were made and done like that I think the companies would try harder to make sure it made the cut to be sold otherwise they would not make any money off it... the way it is now they do testing after the fact and meanwhile things are showing they could be harmful (and in some cases like the peanut butter case recently deadly) and yet they are marketing and selling and making money off stuff that is making people sick.. That's where the mistake lies...letting them sell before it deemed safe for consumption..

that would be great, but then they would be spending more money than they make, and that would not be in THEIR best interest. I mean, did you hear about those peanut factories that just did tests til they got a negative for salmonella and didn't do anything about the previous batches that tested positive? I mean, this world is just about making money, they don't care how badly it screws everyone else up.
