Bed wetting... Empty Bed wetting...

Post by rocknrollmommy616 Sun Dec 07, 2008 6:55 pm

Does anybody have kids who are bed wetters. Or are you a bed wetter yourself(currently or formerly)? I don't know why but I was just thinking about this. I figure this is a big problem and if anyone has had this problem or has children with this problem. I am giving you a place to talk about it. I have my reasons for starting this thread:

Up until about 2 years ago, I wet the bed. That's right, I was a senior in high school and still wetting my bed. To some that may sound pathetic or juvenile or just plain ridiculous. But it's true. And I wasn't acting out, I wasn't lazy, I had never had an actual incontinence problem. I used to sleep walk as a little girl. I would go to sleep at night and sometime during the night or even the next morning, I would wake up to find myself on my mother's bed. It was so bad that I even walked out of our apartment, downstairs, and to a random person's car and tried to open it b/c I was so deeply in this sleep and dreaming. I tell you this because when I say that I was a deep sleeper, I want you to know my full meaning. I was a DEEP SLEEPER.

For most of my adolescent years I was ashamed and embarrassed about this problem. I've never really openly talked about it because it was so shameful to me. I had to wear diapers and I had ruined so many mattresses that finally my mom bought a mattress and had to leave the wrapping on it so I could not destroy it. I am sure My problem was not only hard on me, but on my family. But It was horrifying for me. When I went to sleep over at friend's houses I was mortified because I was so afraid they would hear the crinkle of my diaper underneath my pajamas. When I was old enough to date I was frightened because if I ever found a man I would like to marry, I would be wetting the bed every night with him next to me!

We tried everything; pills, nasal sprays, limiting caffeine consumption, limiting liquid consumption of any kind, setting my alarm. Nothing would work. My parents didn't know this for a long time but I was sexually active for most of my teenage years. I had some really horrible psychological problems having something to do with my father and his absence from my life and his inability to bond with me in any way. Anyways, I never slept over at these boys' houses because I was afraid I would wet the bed. Well, when I was 19 I started dating a guy who lived in a house with like 4 other dudes he worked with and such. Well I was so afraid of spending the night because I might scare him off with my bed wetting issue. Well turns out I couldn't sleep while I as over there anyway because this guy had a snore like a dragon! I felt like a monster was hiding somewhere under the bed! Anyway, I stopped. Just all of a sudden, it stopped. Maybe it was the fear of the bed wetting affecting a relationship(that didn't work out anyway thank god), or maybe it was his horrible snoring that kept me awake enough to go to the bathroom when my body was ready for me to go.

My point is: if you have kids that wet the bed, give them time. Reward them the day after a dry night. Don't punish them, or let them see that you're a little upset about buying a new mattress for them, or having to buy more sheets, or extra detergent because of all the extra laundry, and don't make them stand in line with you while you buy diapers(I hated that, it was so shameful). Try to be supportive and encouraging. I mean, sometimes it just takes time for these things to fix themselves. I am now about to be married and haven't wet the bed for a very long time. although sometimes I do fall so deeply asleep I wake up in a tiny wet spot and then hurry to the bathroom. It'll pass, trust me. ^_~

Bekah sweetie I am so sorry you had to go through that! My husband went the bed until he was 8 or 9 and had issues with it but he doesn't talk about
it that much. Now I know how to better handle the situation if it arises with my children. Thank you for sharing!

well the thing is that apparently its also hereditary. So Maybe look for that in your kids cuz I will be looking for it in Joseph. My father was a bed wetter until he was 13.. so... it was good that he knew how to deal with it. I just thought this would be a good support thread if anybody already has kids who have this problem.

I can remember a handful(maybe more?)times that I wet the bed too...Sometimes it was because I dreamt that I was peeing and then I really did..My boys have wet the bed a few times. It happens...I don't stress over it...I know with them it's not intentional...If it became a pattern I might become concerned though...

I wet the bed from like 8years old to 10 or 11 years old not sure why it started at 8 though...Mine was because I too was a deep sleeper and also because I would have a dream that I was walking to the bathroom going through the motion of peeing on the toilet only to wake the next morning and find out that it was a dream and really I had peed the bed.

Funny though you would post this though because I am trying to get my son to stop peeing in pull ups at night and he is 5 1/2 years old.

I wet the bed after my parents divorced, my dad came back from sadi (the itty war) and was a dush bag he took my mom and me on a grand “get back together” vacation that turned out to be pretty bad.. my mom had a nervous breakdown after that and I stopped talking for awhile and just wet the bed I wouldn’t tell anyone anything but I remember dreaming like knowing I had to pee and not being able to wake up and in my dreams looking for bathrooms and then I got to where I would try to make myself go to the bathroom like if I couldn’t wake up maybe sleep walk or something? I just would imagine every step of getting to the bathroom like if I did it right I would get out of bed and go even to the turn over pull back sheet shift wait.. it never worked I would wake up to that seeping warm wet feeling and whoever I was sleeping with screaming and squawking , one of my aunts finally bought a “trundle bed” thing that I slept on and then I was afraid of rolling down the stairs but my cousin would joke she could roll me into the bathroom at the first hint of wetness lol..
It eventually passed and I eventually started talking again but they never made me wear diapers or anything and they were very supportive just found ways around it puddle pads rubber sheets and so on..
