5 day old baby and constipation
I am going to a "doctor"(don't ask lol) in a few hours or so, but was wondering if anyone else had ever had this problem with their newborn. My DS has not had a BM since noon on Saturday. He has had plenty of wet diapers, but no stools. I JUST started giving him breastmilk, but how long does it take for his system to digest food? He eats plenty (3 oz every 3-4 hours) and has serious gas, but no poo!!! Does this sound like a familiar situation to anyone? I could use the help.

as a baby they can go 5 to 6 days with out a BM, it is actually quite common actually. If he still hasn't gone in a couple of days than I was advise notifying the pediatrician....My DD often went two or three days with out a BM...used to freak me out at the begining too.

We still deal with constipation at 2 years old with my DS. He was really bad as an infant with it. Does yours seem to be in pain? Is he grunting? Some things you can try are bicycling his legs, pushing his legs up to his chest, massaging his tummy in a counter-clockwise rotation, giving a little bit of Dark Karo Syrup in the bottle (we didn't do this until like a month or so though).
Our Dr. also said it was "normal" not for them to go fo that long, but our DS would be in SOOO much pain after 2 days, we had to use intervention - including enemas and suppositories - then eventually prescription laxative.

[i][b]Well my lil girl who is almost 3 gets like that quite a bit too to where she really has to grunt and push for awhile. But it is because she loves to eat cheese. Although I tell her she cant eat alot because she wont be able to poop she doesnt care a bit. When they my two kids were younger I would give them karo syrup also. But now that she is older I try to trick her into taking a stool softener that usually gets things going without being as reactive as a laxative.

He finally had one today! He looked like he really enjoyed it actually lol. We went to change his diaper cuz he was tooting up a storm and started smelling to high heaven. We checked his diaper and there it was! As we took his diaper off, he continued to poo! lol I am so glad he finally had a stool. Thanks for all the advice tho girls, I'm going to have to write down all of your suggestions for next time!! ^_^ Thanks mucho guys!
