Atlas was born Sept. 7, 2008, he was a perfectly healthy baby boy. The day after he was born the doctors found out he had acid reflux so they put him on Zantac and Reglan. Everything went fine and we brought him home on the 10th. We had him home for a few days and on the 13th of Sept. I woke him up at 1pm to feed him, he was really hot so I brought him into the front room to air him out, I tried feeding him and he was acting fussy and wouldn't eat. He still felt very hot so I checked his temperature and it was 101 degrees, I rushed him to the hospital. The stupid nurse asked why I didn't give him any Tylenol when he had the temperature and I said I didn't know what to give to a 6 day old baby, so I just brought him to the hospital. She said because he was so young that they would have to do a spinal tap and check for meningitis. Every test they did on him came back negative, I had GBS when I was pregnant, they tested him, NEGATIVE. They tested him for everything bacterial, and ALL the tests came back negative. His pediatrician (Dr. SIVAM) said they didn't know what was wrong with him, so they were going to CONCLUDE it was a virus, he had a cold!! They didn't know what it was so they decided it was JUST A COLD!!! She said he'd have to stay in the hospital for 3-5 days to find out all the results to everything. They put him on antibiotics just incase he had something they couldn't find right away, but said there was nothing to give him for the cold, it had to run through his system in a couple days, like an adult, and he would be fine. He continued to have a fever daily for several days, and I noticed his stomach was swollen and hard, and told them to check it out. I developed pleurisy, which couldn't be passed to him, but they wanted to give him a chest xray, just to rule it out, because they didn't know what was wrong with him. I told them because of his swelling I wanted them to xray his stomach too, they said because he was so little they could get it all in 1 xray. They said his chest was fine, but never said anything about his stomach. ~*~I WAS JUST A NEW MOM, AND I NOTICED EVERY LITTLE THING, EVERYTHING WORRIED ME, SO I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!~*~ Finally after several days in the hospital he was fever free, they said when he was fever free for 24 hours, he could go home. After we reached 24 hours, they said he could go home in the morning. He was fever free for 36 hours on Sept. 18th. At 10:30am they took him off the antibiotics and took out his IV and said I could get him ready!!! I noticed his hand wouldn't stop bleeding, so the nurse said since he was a baby it took longer for their blood to clot, so I had to apply pressure for 5 minutes. After I did that, the bleeding STILL didn't stop. The nurse(Heidi) changed his gauze bandage 3 times, and it still bled!!!!! His doctor checked on him, said he was OK, and signed him out of the hospital!!!! They told me to take home my baby!!! He was still bleeding!!!! By the time we left the hospital and got home, his sleeve and bandage was DRIPPING wet with blood. I rushed him in the house and changed his bandage again. I woke up my husband so he could see the baby before he went to work. When he was holding him he noticed the babies eyes wouldn't focus on us. He would roll his eyes in the back of his head, and his eyes would wonder side to side, he wouldn't look at us, like he had before, I thought he was just not used to being home, and had to adjust. His hand was still bleeding, so I called the hospital's pediatrics dept, where he was, and asked them about it, and they STILL said it was normal, apply pressure. As the day went on, he was acting like he was constipated, he would lift his legs up and scrunch his body like he had to go to the bathroom, and nothing would happen. I tried helping him by taking his temperature rectally, every time they checked it in the hospital, he would go to the bathroom, but nothing worked. we took a nap at 3pm, and woke up at 6pm. His hand was still bleeding so I called the hospital AGAIN!!! They said well, it should have stopped by now, but he's OK, just apply pressure again!!! We was lethargic, he would just lay there, and barely move, he was pale and clammy, and his forehead was sweating. I called his pediatrician and she said to take him to the hospital. I rushed him in and they just started doing MORE tests on him, Every time they poked him, he NEVER stopped bleeding. They couldn't find a vein, so they poked him OVER AND OVER again!!! They did a sugar test, a prick on his heel, and it NEVER STOPPED BLEEDING!!! They said they had to do ANOTHER spinal tap, we had to leave the room. Finally after waiting so long, I went back in there, and they had an oxygen bag on him, they said before they had a chance to do anything he had a seizure!!! They took him for a CAT scan, and brought him back, and just did MORE tests on him, they had NO IDEA what was wrong with him. They got ahold of his doctor and she said to take him out of the hospital, have Children's Memorial in Chicago get him. By now, it was hours later, midnight, they had put him on a ventilator and gave him medicine to relax his body, so he couldn't function!!! I kept asking when the other hospital was coming. They said they'd be there in 20 minutes in a helicopter. We kept WAITING and WAITING, and Community Hospital just kept telling us what we wanted to hear to shut us up!!! Finally an hour and a half later the team rushes in, I ask them if there's room in the helicopter for me to go with. They said they didn't have a helicopter they came all the way from Chicago in an ambulance. Community Hospital lied to me!!! The second Children's Memorial team walked in, they knew something was wrong. Also, by then, his eyes and skin had started to turn yellow, and Community said he probably had jaundice!!! When Children's Memorial saw him, and saw his skin and stomach they said his liver was shutting down!!! From days earlier when I told the pediatrics nurses his stomach was swollen they just ignored me, our baby was suffering from a liver that was shutting down from days earlier!!!!!! And when They saw the bleeding, Children's Memorial said his body had an infection that wasn't letting his blood clot!!! And didn't understand why Community didn't notice the signs!!! They asked for blood since he was bleeding from 11am until 1:30am, and the hospital came back with a baby about of blood!! The lady(Kelly) from Children's Memorial actually said "What the hell am I going to do with this", he has been bleeding ALL DAY, I need an adult amount of blood. His body was so weak by then that they could not find a line into his body, they had to drill a hole into his bone in his leg, to get a central line to his body, and because of that, his leg lost circulation and turned black!!! Every time the team from Chicago would ask for something or needed something the people from Community would come back in several times asking what they needed what they wanted, not ever knowing what they were doing!!! By the time we left for Chicago, no one from Community was working on him, or even in the room!!! Children's Hospital had to take over completely because Community was so incompetent they had no idea what they were doing. The team from Children's Memorial worked SO HARD and it took them OVER an hour to get him stabilized long enough to get him in the ambulance and to Chicago. We made it to Chicago, and they worked on him for almost 24 hours!!! They did everything they could, and tried so hard, but by the time Children's Hospital got him, it was too late!!! The infection he had took over so bad, he was brain dead. If he made it through the infection he would be in a bed on machines, keeping him alive, for the rest of his life, and I said I didn't care if he was brain dead, I would wipe his butt till he was 80, but there just wasn't any chance. And because of the line in his leg, and it turning black, if he made it through the infection they would have to take his leg!!! They said the part of his brain that could think, recognize, function, understand, it was gone. The only part of his brain that worked was his spinal cord, that made his body move, involuntary movements, that he didn't understand us. But I couldn't believe that. When I would tell him to open his eyes, he opened them. He was so swollen from the fluid, his arms stuck straight out, but I would tell him to show me his muscles, and he would scrunch up his arms, I'd tickle his feet, and he would move his toes. At home He would pucker his mouth and stick out his tongue, and I called it my little sucky face. I told him to give momma her sucky face, and he'd scrunch his chin and even with the tube in his throat I could still hear him sucking!!! So they couldn't tell me he didn't understand!!! When I would talk to him, on the brainwaves there would be a flicker, and then nothing, and we'd check his eyes, and nothing was there, so We knew he wasn't there anymore!!! And finally after Children's Memorial tried so hard, and Community failed him so miserably, we knew we couldn't let him suffer anymore, and we decided at midnight we would let him rest and go to sleep, and take him off the machines. I wanted to wait till he got tired enough and went on his own, but in the end, I knew he was suffering more then we were, and as a mother, I could not let him go through the wait, and if I ever did anything for him in his 13 days, I wanted it to be, ending his pain!! We took him off after midnight, and they gave him so much morphine so he wouldn't feel anything, and he fought SO HARD, he tried and tried, but after they stopped the blood pressure medicine, we knew he was too weak, but he fought so damn hard, and if he wasn't so sick, he would have made it.
He was trying to breath and his heart was so strong, but after fighting so long and hard, and getting so weak, he made it 27 minutes, he tried for 27 minutes!!!! He was so strong even till the end, and he finally went to sleep and wasn't in anymore pain at 1:23am on September 20, 2008!!!!!
If you can learn anything from this tragedy, and can do anything, PLEASE, do NOT take your children, your family, to Munster Community Hospital in Munster, Indiana!!!!!! They failed him, and he wasn't the first child, and he won't be the last!!!! Please whatever you do, DO NOT go to Community Hospital!!!! And please, if you need a pediatrician, DO NOT pick Dr.
Geetha Sivam!!!!!!! Please protect your family, do anything you can!!!!! Even if you have to drive a few more minutes, or a few miles further, DO NOT go there!!!! Go somewhere else, do not let this happen to you!!!!!!

Re: Very Sad Story
Oh wow that is so so so sad....poor lil guy if this is legit that hospital should be sued for all they have and every practitioner, nurse, dr anything that had anything to do with this malpractice should definitely be fined and jailed. And although money cannot do much to replace a life it should be given to those parents who went through so much just to save their lil guy. The hospital should be closed down and all the dr licenses stripped.[b]
