Re: Gripe Water
I wondered about it a little myself. They did not have it when my daughter was a baby. I used peppermint water or a teaspoon of ice water and it worked great for her colic. I'm glad to hear that gripe water works, now I know what to do this time.

Re: Gripe Water
According to the bottle directions it says to give a newborn 1/2t. Do you just let them drink it straight or put it in their bottle?? It smells nasty...like black licorice! Also, do you just give it to them when they are fussy & gassy or on a regular schedule? So sorry to be full of questions....we are about to lose our minds around here. Brenden screamed until 11:30 last night...he ended up sleeping in his vibrating bouncy.

Re: Gripe Water
Michelle- I would use it when you need it otherwise you won't know if Brenden is outgrowing the problem...It actually has no real taste to it...Yes I've tried it .You can do it separately or put it in the bottle.I've used it several times when Luc just acts like his belly hurts...I love it and my mom said it sounds like it would work well(I wanted to know from a medical standpoint if it's ok to use regularly).Hope it works for Brenden!!!
Bekah- Gripe Water can be bought at pharmacy's or I found it in the organic foods section(where they sell all the herbal supplements). It's used to sooth baby's bellies for colic or upset belly. It works well!!!

Re: Gripe Water
my mom said she was going to get him some tummy drops (i suppose this is the same thing) the other day while she was at the pharmacy. I think I might use it with little joey. he has gassy issues. It's knida sad to watch him try and push out his gas. :'(
Re: Gripe Water
Gripe water is different than Mylicon drops. Mylicon (sp?) is Simethicone which helps break up gas in the stomach and Gripe Water is all natural that also helps in the intestines. I've used both and I must say the gripe water works faster and lasts longer. I think I figured out the issue with Brenden not sleeping the last 2 nights. It just dawned on me (so stupid of me to just now recognize it) that he has been having smears of poop in his diapers...about 2 diapers a day and then a medium size poop. Nothing like the pattern he had until I started putting 1T of rice cereal (my mom's idea to help the formula stick to his ribs better) in 3 bottles a day. I think the cereal backed up his bowels. We had HORRIBLE issues with Dawson in this area (he ended up having surgery at 2 1/2 years with EIGHT partial bowel obstructions) so I should be a freakin' poop expert. Seeing only smears a couple of times a day is a sign they are not emptying their system properly. With Dawson I would give him a bottle of about 1/2 ounce apple juice mixed with 1 ounce water which would stimulate his bowels. I did that with Brenden a few hours ago and dude had a GINORMOUS bowel movement. Hopefully our problems are solved for tonight and we can actually sleep.

Re: Gripe Water
Michelle - so it's okay to use the pear juice and stuff with an ounce of water? DS kinda does that. Has tiny little smears, but then big poops. Not very often but once in a while this happens. I bought the Mylicon, but only because I didn't know where to find the gripe water. They don't sell it at walmart. Do I have to get it a walgreens or CVS or something?
Re: Gripe Water
Eileen- Do you have a Wegmans store where you live?I've found the Gripe Water there? If not check this link because you can order it through there... http://www.wellements.com/default.asp.
Bekah- Use any types of juice very sparingly at this age.Their bellies aren't really ready to digest anything other than milk(breast or formula). It can work to move bowels, but again use it sparingly.Try a warm bath or take a temperature if the little man seems to be struggling...If you were to bring Joey in to the hospital for constipation, all they usually do is take a temperature and that loosens things up.Hope that helps!

Re: Gripe Water
Shannon - thanks for the tip! I haven't used it yet, but i believe a nurse actually told me to use the pear juice funnily enough...
Re: Gripe Water
I've typed this out and tried to post it THREE times this morning...and this is it! What's up with my computer???
Anyway...
Bekah - Shannon is right...the digestive systems of a baby this small isn't made to process anything other than milk. However, a very small amount of juice mixed with water really does work to stimulate the bowels. If you notice the smears and smaller BM's coupled with fussiness and a not so soft tummy you can bet he is constipated. I used the juice/water mixture with Dawson and it worked well....better than using a suppository or babylax IMO.
Eileen - I found the Gripe Water at Target...in the pharmacy. I have also seen it BRU.
AFM - Brenden slept WELL last night! I put him down at 10:30 and he slept until 1am, hubby took that feeding and then Brenden woke again at 4am which I took. I actually got almost SIX hours of sleep at ONCE! WOO HOO!!! He got up this morning at 7am and stayed up for a couple of hours...he was so happy and content! I'm thrilled....THRILLED!

Re: Gripe Water
We used the avent bottles and had good luck with them...DS#1 had terrible gas with every single bottle we tried until the avent ones..With DS#2 I again tried all the other bottles...With Lucas we just bought 2 bottles so when DH wants to feed him he can. They are really expensive tho now if you get them BPA free...
Re: Gripe Water
We use the AVENT also as that is what ODD used and I love them, we tried everything else and she would only take those...when we started supplementing at the hospital both times, that is what they gave us...and even now with the BPA controversy, they gave us the regular AVENT bottle and said they don't feel there is a need to switch to the BPA free.

Re: Gripe Water
We have a bunch of Avent bottles that arent BPA free but DH wont let me use them...So we donated them....
Re: Gripe Water
Shannon- I had been going back and forth with myself about switching...my Babies R Us wouldn't exchange them as they weren't officially recalled. (some stores did). It would have cost us $150 to replace what we had and we don't put them in the microwave and I hand wash them...always have. But I figured I would really see when I got to the hospital...if they gave me BPA free ones than I was going to push DH to spend the money...but alas they saved us a bundle and said they are safe.

Re: Gripe Water
We hand wash ours too.Our Babies R Us would only exchange them if I had a receipt. The only reason we bought any bottles at all is because thhat way DH can feed Luc too, but we'd already donated the bottles before that.I'd planned to breastfeed exclusively and DH asked if we could supplement once in awhile so he could help out once in awhile...Since we only bought 2 bottles it wasnt too bad but we had quite the collection of bottles before we donated them.Had we been planning to use more bottles we never would have gotten rid of them...Still wish we'd kept them...
